Heredia City Guide
Located only 11km north of San José, Heredia could be a million miles from Costa Rica's dusty capital city. Moving to its own rhythm, surrounded by breath taking volcanoes and sprinkled with colonial charm, this is one location which should not be missed off any travel intinerary.
Founded in 1706, Heredia city centres itself around the aptly named Parque Central which is a chilled out place to watch the world go by. It's also worth visiting "La Iglesia de la Inmacualda Concepción", a sturdy church built in 1797 which has withstood numerous earthquakes, unlike many other Costa Rican buildings.
Heredia is also home to the National University (UNA) which means that it houses a buzzing, young student population both on and off campus.
And once you've experienced Heredia city to the max, there are numerous landmarks in the surrounding region which make unforgettable day trips. The historical town of Barva is only a 20 minute bus ride away and is packed with beautiful sixteenth and seventeenth century architecture. Whilst the stunning Barva volcano marks the highest point in the Braulio Carrillo National Park, reaching 9500 feet.
Heredia province is also famous for coffee production and the land is smothered in lush green plantations. A coffee lovers' trip to the region must include the Café Britt Finca Tour, a caffeine fuelled day which includes plenty of coffee tasting. However, in recent years Costa Rica's economy has changed somewhat due to the production and exportation of Intel pentium processors from none other than the Heredia province. This has resulted in a huge increase in employment and after only three years, exportation from the industry constituted three times more than that of coffee and bananas put together. Needless to say, it has added to the popularity of the city, making it a thriving place to live and visit.
